Africans Rising Photo Contest

Here is an opportunity for African photographers to win a one-month all expense paid, photography residence in either Tanzania or South Africa, in the Africans Rising Photo Contest.   


The grand prize winner for 2017 shall win a one month residence in either Tanzania or South Africa. Here, they will spend a month working on a

photography project with the theme ‘Africans Rising.’



The theme for 2017 is ”AfricansRising, IAmAfrican”- a theme to celebrate our identity, history and heritage as Africans.

“For these past 53 years, others have been writing our story, now is the time for us to take a brave step, a giant step for us and start writing (and telling) our own story – a story of a united Africa, at peace with prosperous and healthy people.”



The Contest ends May 10th, 2017, at 11:59 pm East African Time (the Entry Deadline). All entries must be received by the Entry Deadline.



African citizens, at least 18 years of age living within the African continent and its territories. Africans citizens living in the diaspora may also enter.

Employees of Africans Rising and each of their affiliates, subsidiaries and agents, and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such individuals, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter or win a prize.



  1. Sign up for the Kilimanjaro declaration here in order to be considered for the contest. This is a movement that is determined to foster an Africa-wide solidarity and unity of purpose of the Peoples of Africa to build the Future we want – a right to peace, social inclusion and shared prosperity.
  2. Send your images to the following email:

Your file names on the picture should include your surname, and your given name.

In the email, include a short biography of yourself and a paragraph about each photograph. 



The preferred size is 72 dpi jpeg with either Adobe 1998, sRGB or Untagged colour profiles.

The images should have a maximum resolution of 2000 pixels on the long side.

You may enter a maximum of only three photographs.
