A checklist of things to do in CorelDraw before sending your design to press
Preparing your design work for print in CorelDraw (especially for the first time) can be a hell of a task, knowing fully well that the Nigerian print houses could be unforgiving both in handling your work and the results you get. There are way too many pitfalls; from color mode, to bleed and to fonts, just to mention a few. All these, if not carefully checked, can make the end-result of your print job look like it never had anything to do with the original design on your screen.
Also, its worthy of note that most offset printing houses in Somolu, Mushin and all over the country, prefer your design work turned-in in CorelDraw format and properly prepared for print before they can proceed to pre-press and get the job done.
Here is the Checklist of things you should do while getting your design ready in CorelDraw for printing at the press:
- Ensure that the design work is in proper orientation and paper size
You need to understand the various paper orientation and sizes. A0 is double of A1, A1 is double of A2, and A2 is double of A3 and so on. Also, a job destined for portrait print should not be laid and designed in landscape orientation.
Flyers (handbills) in Nigeria are usually in A5 paper size (which is half of A4 size) and can be either portrait or landscape. Posters are A3, A2 or A1 in size.
- Ensure that you are using the right color mode
There are two major color-modes in which you can prepare your design; RBG and CMYK.
- RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) is an addictive color model in which the three colors are added together in different ways to produce a wide array of colors. RGB mode is best suited for design work that will be viewed only on screen (web, TV, mobile e.t.c)
- CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) also called process color or four color, is a subtractive color model that is best suited for color printing. The four colors are combined to bring out any other color that you might have prepared you design in.
You should check if your work is in RGB, if it is, then you should convert it to CMYK by following the instruction above.
- Make sure the font (typeface) used in the original design ends up in the print result i.e no font change
This is a major pitfall for a lot of designers sending-in their work for print. Because the printing company might not have that beautiful font you used in your design, CorelDraw will be forced to replace the original font with the most similar font in the computer, changing the entire look of your design work.
To prevent this, you need to convert the texts to vector (curves):
If your design work is multi-paged, you will have to do this one page at a time. Also, you will need to be mindful of fonts hidden in powerclips.
On the selected page, do a Ctrl+A to select all the objects and texts, then do a Ctrl+G to group them all together. Proceed to do a Ctrl+U to ungroup all, making sure they all still remain selected.
Afterwards, go to the menu-bar (all the text and objects on the page are all still selected) and do Edit — Select All — Text.
This action should select only the text on the page; then do a Ctrl+Q to convert all the text to Curves (vector). Converting all the texts to vector will ensure that the text retains the same look and shape across different environment.
N.B: Make sure that you save the document as another name different from the name you gave it before converting the text to curves (e.g ‘Jesusflyer.cdr’ becomes ‘JesuflyerCurved.cdr’), so that you can go back and edit the text in the original document if the need arises.
- Ensure that all the pictures in the design work are properly converted
Every picture used in your design must be properly converted to CMYK 32-bits at a resolution of 300. This is to ensure that the picture comes out the way you have it on screen in the best possible quality. During pre-press the printing company may check and do it for you, but other just rush through that phase especially when there are lots of pictures in the design work. Therefore, make sure you do this yourself.
To do this, select the picture, then go to the menu-bar, click on Bitmap — Covert to Bitmap — follow the dialogue. Ensure the resolution is not less than 300.
