Digital Gold: Details of my talk at the Road to Recovery Webinar, 2020
Some of the biggest winners during this Covid-19 Pandemic are Tech companies and Tech workers. In fact, most of the people that lost their jobs during this Pandemic are persons whose job role requires lots of physical presence and strength.
We are in the Information/Digital Age and the world as we know it has never been as interconnected as it is now.
Before now, to make any form of trade or give any form of service, you have to physically move the goods, be physically present and pay for or receive payment in cash or coin or even barter.
All that has changed in the Digital Age! Services, commerce, governance and a whole career can be carried out right in the corner of your room. This opens ups new and exciting opportunities for lots of people.
It is a long established fact that humanity rewards professions that require using your brains over the ones that require using your physical strength. The digital revolution has better-empowered people to use their brains and earn even more!
This is obviously some kind of Gold and must be mined. But unlike the Goldrush which brought about 300,000 people to California in the united states between 1848 – 1855, this digital gold rush will not end in 7 years and neither is bringing a mere 300k people to one spot, instead, it has the capacity to transform the entire world population, giving power to the powerless, voice to the voiceless and of course, riches to hitherto poor nations.
For example, the IT services and Business Process Outsourcing industries in India has contributed up to $180 billion to the country’s GDP in 2019 with $99 billion of that figure coming from exports(Software and IT services) alone. India is a richer (than Nigeria) country due to this fact.
How can I mine this Gold?
To GET StartedJust like every mining (Oil or Gold), an understanding (however Basic) of the industry is very much recommended.
Understanding of the industry that you want to Digitize.
If possible, get some I.T skills.
On the Internet, you can either offer Services or Products:
You can either Freelance or start a proper agency.
A freelancer is someone who offers their services for a fee and usually with no expectation of a permanent single client, although the working relationship can be ongoing. It’s a form of self-employment, similar to operating a home business versus telecommuting.
As a freelancer, you can either source for your own clients by either running ads or counting on referrals. You can also sign up on freelancing platforms online where you can be matched with clients from anywhere around the world. Examples of such platforms are:
99designs.co.uk (For designers)
Paperell.com (For writers)
Publoft.com (For writers)
To freelance, all you need is to have at least one solid skill that can be performed with a computer and Good internet access (although there are nuances).
An agency is more established having other skilled tech workers (e.g Programmers, Designers e.t.c) working on diverse projects for different clients (more permanent), either individual or corporate client.
An agency is harder to start especially when you don’t have the capital or a steady clientele. But if you have any of this, you can get started. You probably don’t need a large space to do so. You can even operate and coordinate your team mostly online.
You can either make (Physical or Digital) products to sell online or resell other people’s products.
You can either sell as software as a service (SAAS), sell content, sell software or Physical goods.
Platforms where you can sell your products online:
Just like the platforms for freelancers, these platforms already established and have the clients, some take a percentage of your earning as payment for using their platform while some are free. Examples are:
To sell your products online, you can either create your own platform where you handle all the marketing and branding or you can place your products on other well established online market places.
Selling Information online
- Start a Blog
- Starting a community on social media
- Become a thought leader on social media and gather large following
- Sell e-books on do-it-yourself subjects
All these take time but just like planting a tree, the best time to start was 20 years ago but the next best time is now! – Chinese proverb.
This is the time to start mining your Digital Gold.
